Mrs. Wright’s Educational Philosophy
All children have an inherent sense of curiosity that naturally leads them to a world of discovery. I believe in promoting such a curiosity in my classroom through a variety of teaching strategies, differentiated instruction, and a caring environment. I feel that the theories of educational psychologists Howard Gardner and Nel Noddings are relevant to the reflection of my future classroom setting. Along with their philosophies, I trust that children thrive in safe and nurturing environments, which then allow the teacher to teach to various learning styles and social concepts. It is my obligation to cultivate such a classroom setting that allows my students the necessary skills for learning.
As an educator, the foundation of a quality education should begin with a caring professional who is both knowledgeable and wise in the development of a student’s social learning. I believe, along with educational philosopher Howard Gardner, that a caring professional will be fully cognizant of changes in economic, ethnic, and family compositional issues, and is able to adjust curricula to meet the needs of various learning styles. I believe that any teacher who actively incorporates families, communities, and in a greater sense the world, into their pedagogy will set great examples and positive expectations for their students.
I also believe, as noted by educational philosopher Nel Noddings, that once a positive and caring environment is established, students will excel and take ownership in learning and grow to become healthy, productive adults in society. Along with Noddings, I also believe that to achieve the intrinsic goal of a caring education, instructors should create curriculum that centers on exploration, self-governing, and self-evaluation. It is my professional responsibility to prepare my students for their future and in doing so I will create a loving and trusting environment to foster student growth. In such an environment students will be able to acknowledge the importance and application of the subjects and grow to a higher understanding of self and the natural world. It isn’t until we achieve this hierarchy of self-awareness that we are able to look back and recognize what we have learned.
. The great philosopher and teacher Socrates once said, “I don’t think I have ever taught anyone anything, I have merely put them in a position to discover a concept or principal for themselves.” Exploration of knowledge will never cease, what a teacher provides for his or her student will stay with them a lifetime.
